(April 2005 – Volume 1 – Issue 9) Advances in Hand, wrist and elbow reconstruction were recently discussed in Miami at the first annual Miami hand arthroscopy and arthroplasty course held at the Sheraton Biscayne Bay Hotel in the Brickell area. This innovative meeting brought together some of the leading minds in these techniques from the United States, Latin America and Europe. (standing l to r) Dr. Randip Bindra, Dr. William Cooney, Dr. Alejandro Badia, Dr. Joseph Imbriglia, Dr. Leonard Bodell, Dr. Eduardo Gonzalez-Hernandez, (sitting l to r) Dr. Massimo Massarella, Dr. Eduardo Zancolli III, Dr. Carlos Cagnone (esteemed guest) The conference was chaired by local hand surgeon, Alejandro Badia, MD, FACS , a cofounder of the world reknowned Miami Hand Center. Topics of discussion included elbow arthroscopy and joint replacement, wrist arthrosocopy and rheumatoid reconstruction as well as replacement of other joints such as the base of the thumb and proximal interphalangeal joints. One of the highlights was a cadaveric surgery demonstration of wrist total joint replacement by Dr. Bill Cooney of the Mayo clinic, Rochester, Minnesota , a former president of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand as well as a thumb basal joint reconstruction by Dr. Badia. The meeting attracted nearly 100 surgeons and hand therapists and should have even greater international participation next year partly due to simultaneous translation, as well as the esteemed faculty.
