Amputation of four fingers with a Circular Saw in elderly man
JJ is a delightful and vigorous 73 year old retired man whose favorite hobby is making Westminster chimes clocks for his grandchildren. One ordinary day when he was using a circular saw to cut the molding for another clock, he sustained a devastating injury. He amputated the four fingers of his left hand and was brought to the local emergency room in a small town on the west coast of Florida. His ER doctor astutely sent his wife back to recover two of the fingers from the workshop floor while he searched the state for a hand surgeon who would accept this challenging case.

 

Arthrogryposis Congenita Multiplex
This 5 year old boy presented to the Miami Hand Center from direct referral by a charity clinic. He had almost no use of either upper extremity due to a rare congenital disorder called arthrogryposis congenita multiplex.

AC is a 25 year old male who was assaulted with a baseball bat. He sustained a shattered proximal uln

Bilateral Basal Joint Arthritis in a young woman
BK is the wife of a prominent family practitioner in South Florida. She had been complaining of years of persistant aching in the base of both her thumbs but initally was not given a clear diagnosis. Despite being married to a physician, she could not get relief as cortisone injections were temporary and she was too young for an open reconstruction of the critical basal joint, which is the base of the thumb and the key to pinch activities such as writing.

Hand and Wrist Mutilation due to Truck Tire explosion
E.G. is a young man who was lending a helping hand in his father's auto shop when he nearly gave up that hand to a freak accident. He was changing a truck tire when it suddenly exploded causing his elbow to dislocate and nearly amputate his hand. The wrist injury was so severe that it required a surgical fusion once he had been transferred to a Miami Hospital from a more remote location.

Heterotopic Ossification
E.R. is a 26 year old male lifeguard who had a severe, unfortunate accident the first time he ever mounted a motorcycle. He was in a coma for many months with head trauma and had fractured his right elbow and forearm at the time of injury.

 

Left thumb Basal Joint Replacement
70 year old female 5 years after left thumb basal joint replacement to correct zig-zag deformity and pain as seen still in right uncorrected thumb. Patient presented now to have same procedure done in right hand. Xrays show compariston of arthritic with replacement arthroplasty of thumb basal joint.

 

Near Amputation of Forearm from Saw Injury
A.A. is a 40 year old radio journalist who sustained a nearly complete amputation of the distal forearm when a circular saw blade accidentally spun out of its housing on new year's day. He was taken to the OR as an emergency where the arm was reattached using a steel plate and screws and bone from his pelvis as graft.

 

Rheumatoid Arthritis
This 62 year old lady presented with a 20 year history of rheumatoid arthritis medically managed by her rheumatologist. Unfortunately, her hand deformities were progressive to the point where many daily activities were hampered. She was understandably concerned about the appearance as well.
